A Moody, Dramatic Oregon Waterfall Engagement
Joanne and Austin made the drive down from Washington with one thing in mind — something dramatic, lush, and unmistakably Oregon. As a couple who loves escaping to the Pacific Northwest’s wild spaces, they wanted their engagement session to feel cinematic and alive. Latourell Falls in the Columbia River Gorge delivered exactly that. On an overcast fall morning, with mist hanging in the air and every shade of green glowing around us, we had one of those sessions that reminds you why you choose locations intentionally. More on Latourell Falls and planning your own session there below!
Why Latourell Falls is One of Oregon’s Best Engagement Session Locations
When couples ask me about waterfall engagement sessions in Oregon, Latourell Falls is always at the top of my list — and for good reason. While spots like Multnomah Falls draw massive crowds and come with significant logistical challenges, Latourell offers something rarer: accessibility, intimacy, and genuine photographic flexibility all in one place.
Easy Access Without the Crowds
Located just off the Historic Columbia River Highway, Latourell Falls is one of the most accessible waterfall locations in the Gorge. The parking area is straightforward to find, there is no strenuous hiking required to reach the falls, and compared to its more famous neighbors, the crowds here are noticeably thinner. For an engagement session, that matters enormously — fewer people means more freedom to move, more time in your favorite spots, and a more intimate overall experience.
A Location That Actually Works for Couples Photography
Here’s something most people don’t realize about waterfall photography: beautiful as they are, many waterfalls are simply not practical for couples sessions. The terrain around the falls often leaves no good vantage point for a photographer to work from, or places the couple so far from the waterfall that the connection to the location is lost entirely.
Latourell solves this completely. You can walk right down to the base of the falls, where an open area with natural rock formations creates a perfect foreground for placing a couple with the full cascade behind them. The scale works. The access works. The light works. It is one of the rare waterfall locations in Oregon where the couple, the falls, and the photographer can all exist in the same frame naturally and beautifully.
Light That Works All Day
One of my favorite things about Latourell Falls as a photography location is how forgiving the light is throughout the day. The surrounding forest canopy and the natural shade created by the gorge walls diffuse harsh sunlight beautifully, meaning you are not locked into a narrow golden hour window. Overcast days — which Oregon delivers in abundance, especially in fall — are genuinely ideal here. The soft, even light makes colors pop, skin tones glow, and the mist from the falls adds a layer of atmospheric magic that is nearly impossible to recreate anywhere else.
What to Expect at a Latourell Falls Engagement Session
The Lower Falls and Base Area
The main attraction is the lower falls — a striking 249-foot drop framed by basalt columns draped in bright yellow lichen, one of the most distinctive and recognizable features of any waterfall in the Gorge. The open basin at the base gives couples room to move and gives photographers room to work, with rock formations that frame the scene naturally. This is where we spent a good portion of Joanne and Austin’s session, letting the falls do what they do best.
The Bridge
Just a short walk from the base, a charming footbridge crosses the creek and offers another beautiful vantage point. It is an intimate spot — enclosed by towering trees and lush greenery — and one that feels like it belongs in a fairytale. For couples who want a mix of dramatic wide shots and something more tucked-in and romantic, the bridge delivers that contrast perfectly.
The Upper Falls Trail and Surrounding Forest
For those willing to explore a little further, the trail continues up through dense forest to the upper falls — a smaller but equally beautiful cascade. The trail itself winds through some of the most lush, quintessentially Oregon scenery you will find in the Gorge. Moss-covered trees, fern-lined paths, and the constant sound of rushing water in the distance make even the walk between locations feel like part of the session.
Planning Your Latourell Falls Engagement Session
Best Time of Year
Latourell Falls is genuinely beautiful year-round, but fall and spring are my personal favorites for engagement sessions. Fall brings rich color to the surrounding forest while keeping the lush green of the moss and ferns intact. The falls run strongest in late fall through early spring when rainfall is highest, adding extra drama and volume to the cascade. Summer works well too, though the falls will be lower and crowds slightly higher on weekends.
What to Wear
Always, always recommending something your comfortable in. Even if it’s your fav pair of worn out jeans and simple tee. You’ll always be drawn to images that just feel like you and your comfortability will always come through in imagery. Otherwise, lean into the moody, natural setting. Deep jewel tones, earthy neutrals, forest greens, rich burgundies, soft whites or off-whites all photograph beautifully against the lush gorge backdrop. Layers are practical for Oregon weather, and comfortable shoes are a must — while the terrain is accessible, you will be walking on natural surfaces near water.
Permits and Parking
As of the time of writing, Latourell Falls does not require a permit for photography sessions, though guidelines can change and it is always worth checking current Oregon State Parks regulations before your session. The parking lot off the Historic Columbia River Highway is free and typically has available space outside of peak summer weekends. Arriving on a weekday or in the morning on weekends will give you the most peaceful experience.
